Study of Leadership can leaders be born or made Free Essays
Introduction As everybody is living in a competitive world leadership skills are important for successful business. Leadership referred to as direct people to perform a particular task. In a business world, if someone wants to go ahead in the field he may need certain skills which may give an opportunity to be a good leader. We will write a custom essay sample on Study of Leadership: can leaders be born or made? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Simply, it allows a person to climb up the business ladder. Therefore leadership can be considered as one of the main assets a successful manager should have. Management concerns about an effective and efficient way to achieve organizational goals through planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling organizational resources. Whereas leadership is one of the components of directing function mentioned above. This means that leadership often linked to the role of the manager or expert. However, leadership and management are two distinguish roles which are confused by many people. Not all managers, for example, are leaders; and not all leaders are managers. Many researchers have studied leadership in a quantitative and qualitative way and seen that it is far more sophisticated and complex that the leadership concepts discussed in the popular leadership books. Leadership can be represented as a process whereby someone influences the thoughts, attitudes and behavior to achieve an organizational goal. As a result, leadership can make employees more confident and train them to increase productivity through building trust and friendly atmosphere which makes employees to feel safety of their jobs which will help to increase the productivity. In an organization there are informal leaders with no tittle, no authority, no position power, but they can increase personal power. Nowadays, most of the companies agreed that management without leadership is an ineffective activity. The resources of the organization cannot be managed without proper leadership. In addition to that without leadership organization may move too slowly and which may result lose their business too. Leader is the one who is a trustworthy, self-confidence and fulfill promises made and consider the work seriously. Different people are having different attitudes and therefore, they give a solution to a particular problem/conflict in a different way. Therefore, most suitable decision needs to be selected when conflict arises. Therefore, leadership is an activity to get other people to do right things. Therefore, the need lf selecting better leader for an organization has become a challenging task. Thus, by having right team with fully motivated staff and great leadership qualities can enhance the reputation and productivity of the organization. Some researchers commented leadership as a personality perspective such as a trait or behavior whereas others think leadership is an information processing perspective. Therefore, in this analysis it is going to be analyze whether leaders are born or can made. Are leaders born? In the real world there are so many self-made leaders who become success in the business. It is a debatable issue whether they become top by born or experience gained during their life time. When considering Trait theory (Ghee Draft, 2004) explained that ââ¬Å"traits are the distinguishing personal characteristic of leader such as intelligence, honesty, self-confidence, and appearanceâ⬠. That means the Trait theory mainly emphasis that leaders are born. However, this is questionable to see whether people are born as a leader. In that case, it is also needed to investigate people who are not born cannot be a leader. Vien Goleman (1998) reveals that five aspects of emotional intelligence such as self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills can be learned and provide. However, this concept is almost similar to the Trait Theory. Therefore, most of people argue that the traits are important in the development and deployment of people skills. Most of the people argue that leadership is born when consider some characters such as artists and players. However, they have realized that leadership is actually not born. Therefore, following examples illustrate the above concern. Tiger Woods- Golf Champion He has born with some talents of sports. His father worked hard from his early ages to make him Golf champion. Mozart- Musician He also has born with certain musical talent. As his father wanted to make him as a musician from his childhood he was trained to use instruments etc. Hendry Ford ââ¬â Automobile leader His parents were poor people who came to America with the hope of new start for their lives. When he was a child, most of the time he spent with his mother. He is quite and inward looking. In his young age, he mother passed away. He was working as a low level mechanist in various places without having enough money spend better life. He didnââ¬â¢t have any resources such as birthright and pedigree that could make him a born leader. But, finally he became as the greatest leaders the corporate world ever seen. (http://www.businessworld.in/index.php/Columns/Are-Leaders-Born.html, 14/03/11) Those examples prove that their natural talent and qualities improved through hard work of many years. In other words they have improved their influencing ability. ââ¬Å"Leadership is as a process whereby an individual influence a group of individuals to achieve a company goalsâ⬠(Northouse, 2010) Above definition reveals leadership as a process which means it is not trait or characteristic of leadership, but something deferent between leader and the followers. In addition to that it tells that leadership is not a linear event, but it can be considered as a communicating event. Therefore, it emphasizes that leadership is available to everyone. In this circumstance, it is vital to discuss about whether leadership can be made or born. Leadership is Made: A successful business requires proper leaders, but not managers to run the organization to a leading position in the market. Therefore, to achieve this, managers should be a real leaders. Some argue that good leaders are made not born. If someone wants to be a leader he can be an effective leader by improving leadership qualities such as goals, values and concepts. Bateman Snell (2009) reveals a leader who keeps focus on moving the organization towards its ideal future, motivate them to overcome whatever barriers lie in the way. Therefore, leaders need to motivate others and build cooperate with them to achieve organizational goals. Simply, leaders need to make friends rather than enemies. Further, smiley and friendly approach will be the asset to reach for the success. In order to be a successful leader who needs to gain better training to harvest the success. The leader can develop positive thinking which can be enhanced by positive thinking and better training. Therefore, oneââ¬â¢s own abilities and traits are not enough to become a successful leader. In a real world, ââ¬Å"he is born to be a leaderâ⬠or ââ¬Å"he is a natural leaderâ⬠is commonly used phrase. It suggests the Traits perspective takes major part in the leadership. Further, it says that a particular person may have inborn characteristics or qualities which will help them to become leaders. However, figure 1 shows there is a difference between the Trait concept and Process concept (Northouse. P, 2009). Figure 1- The difference between the Trait and Process concept The Trait leadership tells that people who have special, inborn, talent can be a leader. Some of the traits are identified as height, intelligence, fluency and etc. Whereas, the Process concept suggests that leadership is interaction between leaders and followers and makes it available to everyone. Further, it says that leaders need followers and also followers need leaders who are closely linked to communicate each other to continue relationship. Northouse (2009) suggests that according to Douglas Mc Gregor (1960) theory, leadership can be concerned in two aspects such as Theory X and Theory Y. Theory X emphasis if employees are shy, they need to monitor, direct and control by the leader. On the other hand, Theory Y concerns that some people take responsibility and organize themselves to achieve organizational goals. According to theory Y, employees can be easily motivated. However, this concept was taken into account later years and Black and Mounton (1964) developed ââ¬Å"Managerial Gridâ⬠(Northouse, 2009). In this grid he suggests two aspects of leadership behavior such as production and concern of people. Production- this aspect concern about task oriented behavior such as clarifying roles, scheduling work, and measuring output. Concern for people- this emphasis on building trust, camaraderie and a friendly atmosphere. As this is more concern about the people, it helps to motivate employees in order to achieve defined set of vision, strategies and targets of the organization. Therefore, all the theories mentioned above reveals that leadership is accessible for everyone. Northouse (2009), suggests that leaders should focus on vision, purpose, core values and the structure to translate them to take better business decisions. Therefore, it is essential that all level of employees needed to motivate to achieve the organizational targets. Many researchers such as Mc Gregorââ¬â¢s (1960) theory and vroomââ¬â¢s (1964) expectancy theory motivation reveals that followers are able to achieve targets of the organization with the influence of leaders. In addition to that, in expectancy theory it also suggests that different people concern different things. Therefore, different motivational needs are required. Hence, to understand different situations and different people within the organization the need of training and learning skills required for an effective and efficient leader. Further, leaders should have some attributes and qualities to motivate employees or the team in the organization. Therefore, an effective leadership is an important asset to the organization as great leaders create great business components of business success through delegation, direction, motivation, evaluation and conflict resolution. Bateman and Snell (2009) suggest that leadership can be learned and improved by coaching or mentoring. Therefore, better training will enhance the leader to self-motivate and hence, he or she can motivate the team as well. Conclusion In my concern, leaders can be made which means it is accessible for all people and can be learned as a behavior. There are no born leaders. However, all humans born with unique strengths and it enable to be a successful leader. Leadership is a skill, a proper leader needs to have and can be improved with practice. As a person gain more and more practice his or her leadership qualities improve. In some situations, the company may have leaders but not identified their potentials. In that case, they can make a better leader by giving them better training and performance appraisal. This proves that people are not born leaders. In my view, someone can born with some personal qualities and characteristics that makes it easier. When the responsibility is given to a person it gives an opportunity to get broad skills and being coached by someone to encourage them. Hence, they can be motivated and perform on their own skills and knowledge to succeed the company. Media Personality Report Tyler Perry Essay Example
Media Personality Report: Tyler Perry Paper Tyler Perry: From Pain, to Perseverance, and Success ââ¬Å"What is important to me about my movies is that the stories and messages are for anyone. Anyone who needs to learn about forgiveness will enjoy it no matter who they are. â⬠-Tyler Perry Tyler Perry-born Emmitt Perry Jr. on September 13, 1969, has become an icon in his own right. Whether one agrees with his work or not, the fact that cannot be avoided is that he has made pivotal strides in the entertainment industry. He is the true definition of one who exudes perseverance. Perry has turned his past hurts and struggles into an ever-growing empire, with a strong fan base that follows suit. Perryââ¬â¢s work is mostly known for its drama/comedy mix. He knows how to create the perfect blend of making his audience laugh, however not failing to get the moral of the story across. Perry first hit the entertainment scene in 1992, with the production of his first play, ââ¬Å"I know Iââ¬â¢ve Been Changed. He then went on to produce countless other plays such as ââ¬Å"I Can Do bad All By Myselfâ⬠, the play which first introduced his infamous signature character, ââ¬Å"Madea. â⬠With much success with his play, producers soon took notice of Perryââ¬â¢s talents, and he was initially collaborated with evangelist T. D. Jakes to make a film adaptation of his book ââ¬Å"Woman Thou Art Loosed. â⬠He gained much praise for his film ââ¬Å"Diary of a Mad Black Womanâ⬠. He delved into the small screen on June 2006 with the premier of his sitcom, ââ¬Å"Tyler Perryââ¬â¢s House of Payneâ⬠. Perryââ¬â¢s story is unique in a sense that he came from absolutely nothing, to anything that he could have possibly imagined. His personal background speaks volumes and opens his audience to a better understanding as to why he approaches his play and filmmaking the way that he does. Perry talks openly about the abusive relationship with his father. He once tried to commit suicide, and by age 16, he had changed his name to ââ¬Å"Tylerâ⬠in order to separate himself from his father (Manheim). Perry went on to working odd-jobs, saving up enough money to produce his own play. Perryââ¬â¢s first play ââ¬Å"I Know Iââ¬â¢ve Been Changed. â⬠initially flopped with the audiences bringing in a total of only 30 attendees and ran for one weekend. After homelessness and poverty, Perry was able to refurbish his work, and it drew in a larger audience which ultimately catapulted him into success. Perry is known for wanting complete control over all of his work, as he feels that he has put in the blood, sweat, and tears to do so. Tyler Perryââ¬â¢s work does not come without criticism. Notable director/actor Spike Lee has referred to Perryââ¬â¢s work as ââ¬Å"cooneryâ⬠and ââ¬Å"buffooneryâ⬠, stating that he has taken the Black race back to the ââ¬Å"chitlin circuitsâ⬠; Perryââ¬â¢s rebuttal is that ââ¬Å" Itââ¬â¢s attitudes like that make Hollywood think that these people do not exist and thatââ¬â¢s why thereââ¬â¢s no material speaking to themâ⬠(Tedesco). Today, Tyler Perry is still going as strong as ever. In 2008, he opened his 200,000 square foot studios based in Atlanta which consists of 5 sound stages, a post production facility, a pond, a back lot, a 400 seat theater and private screening room and designated areas for entertaining and holding events (tylerperry. com). He is currently working on his latest film ââ¬Å"For Colored Girls Who have Considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enufâ⬠with many more in development (imdb. com) I truly admire Tyler Perryââ¬â¢s story. He gets my utmost respect in regards to the trials he has overcome, his drive, and just being a wonderful spirit overall. I have not seen any of his plays, but have watched many of his movies and was well entertained. Although I do feel conflicted because I can see how some critics may say that he work is a stereotype, and that he has ââ¬Å"sold-outâ⬠. Many African-Americans do feel that in someway Perryââ¬â¢s work embraces a typecast that we have tried hard to move away from. I think what makes Tyler Perry smart is that he is going with what works. He would not have obtained the success that he has if he were not appealing to the masses. I do consider some of his comedies a little off the wall and far-fetched. But I also feel that way about some of Jim Carreyââ¬â¢s work. It is all away across the board for me. Perryââ¬â¢s purpose is to entertain and at the same time bring issues to light that may in turn help his audience. Overall, I just take his work for what it is: entertainment. It is his perseverance that I respect the most. And for that, he deserves all of the success and happiness that his heart desires. Edna St. Vincent Millay essays
Edna St. Vincent Millay essays I think my feelings right now could be summarized from a quote from the made for TV movie: The House Without a Christmas Tree... (Mary Catherine Gallagher Christmas). Just as Mary Katherine Gallagher, a character from the popular television show Saturday Night Live, has mastered expressing her feelings through words, so has the famous poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay. Her expert skill over the words of the English language was far superior to most others. It was this dominance that led Edna St. Vincent Millay to be so excellent at conveying her thoughts, feelings, and beliefs through the medium of language. As a result, she was very influential not only to her readers, but also to writers. Overall, Millays poetry had a huge effect on so many people and groups solely because of her ability to control, with simplicity, the messages she gave when she wrote. In the New York Times Book Review on March 15, 1992, Liz Rosenberg commented on a new compilation of old Millay poems. In general, Rosenberg seemed to enjoy most of Millays works. She found that there are beliefs of feminism, anti-fascism, and social justice scattered all across the stanzas. This article also communicates to the reader that the simplicity of Millays works is beautiful. She also comments that Millay is able to express an important thought or belief in a brief poetic line. This furthers the idea of Millay being able to use words so effectively. Millays ...sense of natural speech... (3) in her works also clarifies her mastery of the use of vocabulary. This New York Times article suggests that Millay is able to give ideas to the reader in such a straightforward style. This way the reader is not overwhelmed by the superfluous and the point comes across simply. When Edna St. Vincent Millay published her first book, Renascence, and Other Poems, in 1917, she was young and new to the writing c...

2 Ways To Make a Model Comet That Makes a Tail
2 Ways To Make a Model Comet That Makes a Tail à A real comet is a mixture of several materials. While each comet has its own unique chemical signature, most of them contain water ice, organic compounds, dust, and rocky or stony chunks. Its fun to make your own comet and expose it to a simulated solar wind to observe its behavior. Heres how to make a model comet that behaves like the real deal. This particular recipe uses solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) so that it will sublimate into a comet tail when exposed to heat. Feel free to substitute ingredients to see what effect they have on your model. Use caution with the dry ice. It is extremely cold and can give you frostbite if you touch it. Wear gloves! Dry Ice Model Comet Materials A bowl or pot large enough to hold your ingredientsA cup of water (it will freeze into ice when mixed with the cold dry ice)A cup of dirt (this contains organic compounds and grit, like a real comet)A cup of sand (many comets contain silicates, like sand or quartz)Some charcoal (comets contain dark material, which can be carbon, like charcoal)A bit of household ammonia or window cleaner (ammonia is a nitrogen compound observed in comets)A couple of cups of crushed dry ice (carbon dioxide is common in comets)Syrup (optional: adds organic compounds and helps the comet stick together)Newspaper (optional: place it on your workspace to make clean-up easier) Make the Comet If your dry ice arrives in large chunks, you can place it in a paper bag and smash it with a hammer to crush it. If you get dry ice pellets, you can use them as they are. Use a wooden spoon or gloved hand to mix together the ingredients and crush them together to make a lumpy ball. Like real comets, your model may break apart. One tip to help it stick together is to let it rest for a couple of moments before picking it up and examining it. You can simulate the solar wind to make a comet tail by blowing on the model. The heat of your breath will mimic the warmth of the sun. Do you smell the ammonia? Real comets smell a bit like window cleaner! Liquid Nitrogen Comet Another way to simulate a comet with a tail is to use liquid nitrogen. For this comet, you dip a porous, rocky material into liquid nitrogen and remove it to see the vapor trail. Since liquid nitrogen is even colder than dry ice, youll want to use long-handled tongs. A good material for the rocky comet is a charcoal briquette. Compare the Simulated Comet To a Real Comet Comets that we see come from either the Oort Cloud or the Kuiper Belt. The Oort Cloud is a sphere of material that surrounds the solar system. The Kuiper Belt is a region located beyond Neptune that contains many icy bodies within range of the Suns gravity. A real comet may be considered to be a sort of dirty snowball made of frozen water, dust, rocks, and dust. There are three parts to a comet: Nucleus - The dirty snowball part of the comet is its nucleus, which consists of meteoritic dirt, frozen gases (like dry ice), and water.Coma - As the nucleus of the comet moves close enough to the Sun, it warms and the frozen gases sublimate into vapor. The vapor pulls dust particles with it away from the nucleus. Light reflecting off the dust accounts for the fuzzy shape of a comet.Tail - Comets are in motion, so they leave a trail of gas and dust in their wake. The solar wind also pushes matter away from the comet and ionizes it into a bright tail. Depending on its location, a comet may have one or two tails.

Evaluating Business Communication Paper Assignment
Evaluating Business Communication Paper - Assignment Example The various communication to managerial personnel and to the members of the accounting department were appropriate for the intended audience. The memo from John, the Accounting Team representative was also expected by the CEO, William. The leadership roles and styles in the scenario affectively established the kind of tone, the structure of the correspondence, and the manner by which the messages would be written. The memo between managers are formal and expected to be structured in a language that is familiar to personnel of managerial position. Likewise, the memo from John to the CEO aimed to be structured in a formal tone, but could still be improved. As briefly noted above, the memo sent by John to the CEO could be improved. The tone should be formal. Likewise, the entire communique should have been proofread extensively to be free from errors. From the memo that was written by John to the CEO, it was evident that there were grammatical errors (the way JJJ Company was written where the word Company was sometimes written in full, sometimes abbreviated, and at times, the abbreviated ââ¬ËCo.ââ¬â¢ was even written in lower case). In addition, there were some statements that should not have been included (ââ¬ËBeth requested all financial reports even though some of them were not requiredââ¬â¢) as the implication, with the rest of the information in the third paragraph, would be immaterial for the CEO. Also, the last statement which says: ââ¬ËIf you have any questions, please contact meââ¬â¢ could still be improved as the structure seemed to be an order to the CEO which is not appropriate. The sender could have said, ââ¬ËIf there are further queries in the disclosed information, I would be more than willing to relay it at your most convenient timeââ¬â¢. In other correspondences, the memos were structured with some aspects similar to a business

Nursing In Critical Care Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Nursing In Critical Care - Case Study Example Patients benefit from such practices and procedures; however, there are instances when these processes and procedures are not adequately carried out during the practice. In the emergency department, critically ill patients are often encountered and they often end up being referred to the intensive care unit. Assessments in the emergency unit are carried out on these patients. Such processes yield essential information pertinent to the patientââ¬â¢s care. After such data is gathered and the patient is referred to the ICU staff, information is then handed over to the ICU staff. In some instances, however, the information handed over is incomplete or is not adequately explained to the nurses in the ICU. Such a situation represents a failure of communication between the two nursing teams. In some instances, essential information is not turned over to the critical care nurses because the focus seems to be on the critical condition of the patient. Aside from incomplete information relay ed, there also seems to be a lack of clarity on the data transmitted during the handover process. The handover has been highlighted in the emergency unit I am currently working with as an important process. I have been taught that it can influence the quality and continuity of patient care. Even with these instructions, however, there are still many instances when there are issues and incomplete data transmitted during the handover process. Based on these considerations, it is safe to assume that there are gaps in our current knowledge and practice, especially in terms of patient handover to intensive care nurses. This paper shall seek to establish the possible factors affecting an effective handover process and the different gaps and issues seen in the practice and the application of this procedure.Ã
